I’ll be running a few one-day landscape photography courses this autumn and winter. The first available date is Saturday 15th of December 2012. Following course will be in January, date to be confirmed soon. This will be a practical, field-based course, cover some of the more scenic areas around the Exe Estuary. This will be aimed at beginner to intermediate user level. The course will focus on composition and use of light to create dramatic images although I am also happy to provide assistance to beginners in operating the basic settings of your camera. As someone who has lived in Devon for many years and a long-term supporter for Devon Wildlife Trust, I’ll be donating 10% of course profits to the Devon Wildlife Trust.

Why should you learn from me?
Well, I’ve been a photographer for 25 years. I started out with film, purely mechanical cameras, taking pictures underwater. I have been working with digital cameras for 10 years, and I’ve been running occasional photography courses and workshops for 12 years, so I understand the mechanics of picture taking and the learning process very well. This is what I do: my pictures have been published in numerous books, BBC Wildlife Magazine and used by Natural England, DEFRA, the RSPB andThe Wildlife Trusts to name a few. As I look to sell my images I am constantly thinking about what makes a good picture and critically analysing images to see how they can be improved. I am also based in Exeter, so know the Estuary well.

What will I get out of this course?
By the end of the day, you should come away with a slightly better eye for composition and lighting, and lots of ideas about using these creatively to produce looks and atmospheres in your images. For beginners you should feel much more confident about changing camera settings, interpreting your images and how different settings will alter your images. I aim to gear the level of technical detail to your individual experience and also just how much you want to get in to technical detail. The teaching aims to cover both the technical and aesthetic aspects of landscape photography.

When will the course start and finish?
To make maximum use of the best light we will start at 10am, and finish around 4pm. The December course will take place between Exminster Marshes and Dawlish Warren. The meeting place will be confirmed once course numbers are confirmed.
What do I need to bring with me?
You will need to bring your camera. If you have additional lenses then a wide angle and a telephoto are useful, as is a tripod. Obviously suitable clothing, depending on the weather, and footwear suitable for sandy or muddy conditions. We will stop for lunch close to a local pub, so you can either bring a packed lunch or have plan to have a pub lunch.
What is the cost of the course?
The course costs £65 per person. Discounts are available for groups of four or more.
