The rule was originally developed for paintings, but of course it applies equally to photographs. As a principle it has endured pretty well, it&#8217;s first description being attributed to an 18th painter called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joshua_Reynolds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sir Joshua Reynolds<\/a>, the first president of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Van_Gogh_-_Starry_Night_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\" alt=\"Vincent Van Gogh The Starry Night. For me at least, it works here, creating a far more appealing image than if the horizon lay along the mid-line of the image, or the sun placed centrally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rules are meant to be broken&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">As with all rules, rules are meant to be broken. Sometimes by breaking a convention one can make the image more arresting.
