{"id":2348,"date":"2013-01-17T18:31:56","date_gmt":"2013-01-17T18:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/?p=2348"},"modified":"2016-12-03T02:45:20","modified_gmt":"2016-12-03T02:45:20","slug":"photoshop-elements-adding-text-and-changing-transparency-in-photoshop-elements-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/photoshop-elements-adding-text-and-changing-transparency-in-photoshop-elements-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Photoshop Elements: adding text and changing transparency in Photoshop Elements 11."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Working with Photoshop Elements 11.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Photoshop Elements is a hugely powerful tool for the price and one of the nice features of the lastest version, Photoshop Elements 11 making many image editing tasks very easy by introducing the &#8216;guided&#8217; mode.\u00a0 The &#8216;expert&#8217; mode provides the greatest number of features and options, and most closely resembles the full professional version of Photoshop.\u00a0 One of the most useful features only available in &#8216;expert&#8217; mode is the layers feature (note, the layers menu is still visible in the top menu bar in both &#8216;quick&#8217; and &#8216;guided&#8217; modes, but all options in the drop-down menu are greyed out).<\/p>\n<p>In this blog I&#8217;m going to talk about using the <strong>Horizontal Type Tool<\/strong> (symbol &#8216;T&#8217;) to create text layer on your image, and then how to modify the text appearance, making it semi-transparent, by changing the layer opacity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1.<\/strong>\u00a0 Once you have opened up Photoshop Elements, select Photo Editor mode, then ensure you are in &#8216;expert&#8217; mode.\u00a0 Once this has loaded then open the image you wish to add text to.\u00a0 As my example I have chosen an image of a black swan guarding her nest as the River Exe floods.\u00a0 I am going to add copyright text to this image, something I often do to identify my images prior to placing them online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2.<\/strong>\u00a0 Once your image has loaded, click on the Horizontal Type Tool &#8216;T&#8217; (highlighted in grey on the lower LHS of the image below).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2350\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/photoshop-elements-adding-text-and-changing-transparency-in-photoshop-elements-11\/capture_adding_text_1_600px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2350\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2350\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2350 \" alt=\"Adding text to an image in Photoshop elements 11, step one, select the Horizontal Type Tool (T).\" src=\"http:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Capture_adding_text_1_600px-1024x547.jpg\" width=\"620\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Capture_adding_text_1_600px-1024x547.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Capture_adding_text_1_600px-150x80.jpg 150w, https:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Capture_adding_text_1_600px-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Capture_adding_text_1_600px.jpg 1362w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image 1. Heer you will find options to change the default font, font size, font style, colour, leading and anti-aliasing. Leading (pronounced &#8216;ledding&#8217;) refers to the spacing between lines in a paragraph, should you be writing more than one line of text. Adding copyright text to an image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sometimes text can look very intrusive in an image.\u00a0 One way of reducing this is to change the opacity of your text.\u00a0 We do this by going back across to our layers menu and clicking on the arrow at the side of the opacity box, immediately above our layers.\u00a0 This then displays a slider control whereby we can vary the opacity of the active layer (i.e. the one highlighted in blue) in this case out text layer, from between 1-100%.\u00a0 As you can see in this example I&#8217;ve selected 41% opacity.\u00a0 As an aside, you&#8217;ll also note that Elements has changed the name of the layer to the text I&#8217;ve typed.\u00a0 This can also be helpful in allowing us to remeber which layer is which.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2377\" style=\"width: 555px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/photoshop-elements-adding-text-and-changing-transparency-in-photoshop-elements-11\/capture_adding_text_5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2377\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2377\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2377\" alt=\"Image 5. Text with reduced opacity<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Okay, so we&#8217;ve got our text written, we&#8217;ve reduced the opacity to our liking, only now it&#8217;s there we suddenly realise it&#8217;s in the wrong part of the image.\u00a0 Not a problem.\u00a0 We simply select our &#8216;Move&#8217; tool.\u00a0 You should then see a bounding box appear around our text, as in image 7, below.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2381\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/colinmunrophotography.com\/blog\/photoshop-elements-adding-text-and-changing-transparency-in-photoshop-elements-11\/capture_adding_text_7\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2381\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2381\" alt=\"Image 7.
